October 11-13, 1996The Names Project Quilt in Washington
In October 1996, AT&T employees played a significant role in assisting the Names Project during the display of the entire AIDS Memorial Quilt in Washington, D.C. from October 11 through 13. Although part of AT&T at the time, Lucent Technologies donated a telephone system to the Names Project to handle the increase in calling demands placed on its office. Lucent also provided the cable ties for the 30,000 plus panels on the mall.
On Saturday, October 12th, AT&T provided the largest corporate contingent of quilt volunteers. From 6:00 a.m. until noon, more than 300 AT&T employees served primarliy as Quilt Monitors, helping the tens of thousands who visited the display on the National Mall. Because of their volunteer efforts, the Names Project received a grant from the AT&T Cares program, which is administered by The AT&T Foundation.
After the AT&T volunteer effort, this 12-foot by 12-foot panel was presented to the Names Project on Saturday. The panel which commemorates many of the AT&T employees who have died of AIDS was designed by Missi Newlin of the LEAGUE Eastern Pennsylvania chapter. AT&T employees at the AT&T facility in Herndon, Virginia, sewed the panel together.
